World renowned New Testament scholar, Ben Witherington III has a review of both Rob Bell and the next segment of his Nooma videos. I found it to be fair and insightful. Check it out for yourself here.
Not much of a "review" more of a description. Love this comment further down the page (which is more of a review)... In the one on anger that was shot in an airport, his quotation of Romans 12 where he abruptly ends the quote mid sentence '...leave room for God.' leaving off the "...'s wrath" is an example of misquoting scripture badly, not just because he cuts it off, but because he makes the opposite point of the passage. the willingness to do that, especially when I'm very certain Rob is very biblically literate, troubles me- especially when none of my people picked up this quotation.
That's my main problem with Bell. He starts with his ideas or presentation then brings scripture in and if it needs to be twisted and squeezed a little to fit his presentation so be it. This is even more a problem knowing the audience he is speaking to.
I sent him the following email. We'll see if I get an answer.
Dear Mr. Bell,
I know that you are busy and might not have time to answer this, but I thought I would chance to ask it. I have always been defending you among my more "conservative" minister friends who are always attacking you. I was touched by Velvet Elvis. That was an incredible book. I have a copy of Jesus Wants To Save Christians that I intend to read on my Christmas break. I also visited your church prior to planting a church in Lansing, MI.
A recent blog review of your Nooma videos (http://benwitherington.blogspot.com/2008/12/rob-bells-nooma-16-22.html) had this comment in the comment section.
"We use the nooma videos, but I think it's fair to have some reservations about some of Rob's teaching. For example, though much of his material is biblical, some of it is not so biblically faithful. For example, in the one on anger that was shot in an airport, his quotation of Romans 12 where he abruptly ends the quote mid sentence '...leave room for God.' leaving off the "...'s wrath" is an example of misquoting scripture badly, not just because he cuts it off, but because he makes the opposite point of the passage. the willingness to do that, especially when I'm very certain Rob is very biblically literate, troubles me- especially when none of my people picked up this quotation."
First, I was wondering if this was true.
Second, if true, I was wondering why you would do this. It seems that your change makes Scripture say something that it is clearly not stating in that passage. I would like to hear your reasoning because I am sure there is a good one.
He can just say, "I didn't say that." That would be a quick discussion. True, I could have spent hours trying to figure out if he did, but he should know.

This should start some conversation ;)
What? I thought you were a huge Rob Bell fan. What happened>
Barry,
That is the most concrete and best point you have made against Rob Bell.
And that misuse of Scripture is horrendous.

Thanks for you time.
Your brother in Christ,
Regan Clem
I know he did not say it in the one abut anger. And I know the one about anger was not filmed in an airport. It was filmed in a grocery store.
I bring this up not to nitpick, but to show that gaining insight from a comment on a blog by a person you do not know is pretty dicey.
I guess I'd try to find out what he actually said first hand before I asked him to answer for it.

And I'd have to actually read another of his books... and I'm just not willing to go there :)
Hmm... I'm stunned. It doesn't seem Regan has gotten a reply.
